The paper titled " Design & Allocation of Transmission Service Charge in Electricity Markets" authored by Dr.Sudha Balagopalan, (Late)Prof. Maya B, Mrs.Mary.P.V, Mr.Nitin Padmanabhan was presented in the First Micheal Faraday IET India Summit(MFIIS) 2012 held at Hotel Kennil Worth, Kolkatta on 25th November 2012. Nitin Padmanabhan Presented the paper on behalf of all authors. The Paper was selected as the 2nd Best Paper among 9 papers presented in the Power Systems Track.The selected top 3 papers after review would be sent for Journal publication.The conference not only had people from academia but also delegates from industry. in my session there was a senior manager from R P Goenka Group( leading company in power sector)He had shown keen interest in our paper and wanted to have further discussions too.The conference was an excellent venue for young researchers to present their research ideas and get a lot of inputs & suggestions from very senior renowned academicians & engineers.

• First Prize for Cube Testing - Dristhi 12

Students of S5 CE K Muhammed Anas and Shyam Kumar won first prize worth Rs. 3000 for Cube Testing in the Tech Fest - Dristhi - 12 conducted at College of Engineering Trivandrum.

MWCNT/PANI Nano composites" in the 4th International Conference on Advanced Nano Materials "ANM 2012" held at IIT Madras during 17th to 19th October 2012.

• Papers presented in RTDN conference at London

Two papers authored by Dr. Sudha Balagopalan, Ms. Anooja. V.S and Ms. Dhanya Devarajan (Asst Professors EEE Dept) titled ”Cooperative Game Theory for Modeling the Transmission Sector of Electricity Markets” and “Cooperative Game Theory for Sharing Transmission Service Charges in Electricity Markets” were presented in the prestigious RTDN conference of IET funded by DST during 22 - 24 November 2011 at London by Dr.Sudha Balagopalan on behalf of all three authors.

The paper "Power Vectors to identify coalition partners in Game Theory controlled electricity markets" authored by Dr.Sudha Balagopalan, Mrs. Mary P V, Ms. Neenu Thomas, Mr.Nitin Padmanabhan which was presented in the 7th International conference ICIIS 2012(International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems) organised by Dept. of EEE, IIT Chennai has been published in the IEEE Xplore in Conference Publications.

• Railway Track Crack Detector

Students of the Vidya Academy of Science and Technology, Thrissur have developed a device to detect cracks on railway tracks under the super vision of  Ms.Akhila.R [ AP EEE] .

New solutions: A device to detect cracks on railway tracks developed by students of the Vidya Academy of Science and Technology in Thrissur.

The device, named railway track crack detector, is an unmanned automatic vehicle that detects cracks as it moves along the track. Ultrasonic detection Ultrasonic detection is the method used. When the vehicle detects a crack, it sends a signal to the control room. While it is on the track, the device does not hinder movement of trains. When a train arrives, the device, which uses a pneumatic system, shrinks. The detector helps view the cracks on the track and its GPS system allows locating the vehicle. “Such a system has not been used anywhere so far,” claimed Sudha Balagopalan, principal of VAST.
There are different ways of detecting cracks on rail tracks using infrared rays, ultrasonic waves, Rayleigh waves, eddy current techniques, image comparison technology and laser ultrasonic method. The students said they found the ultrasonic system the most effective. The system allows detecting even the smallest cracks on the tracks and sends wireless signals to the control room. “The Indian Railways currently uses Self Propelled Ultrasonic Rail Testing (SPURT) cars for detecting cracks. The car is large and cannot give way to a train,” said Dr. Balagopalan. Warning signal The vehicle developed by the students can be programmed to run from its origin to a destination. That is, from one station to another. During its journey, it sends ultrasonic waves to the sides of the tracks. If there is any crack, the signal will not elicit response and it allows a warning signal to be sent to the control room.
The vehicle contains two pistons on the sides and two pistons at the bottom for shrinking when a train approaches. Both pistons work with the help of a small DC compressor, which is powered by a 12 volt battery. Pistons are controlled by two solenoids and the movement of the vehicle is controlled by two DC motors. The DC motors contain gears inside and allow for carrying heavy load. The system is wireless. Solar panels may be mounted on the system for charging the batteries.

International Conference EPSCICON 2012

The second International Conference on Power, Signals, Controls & Computation, EPSCICON 2012 organized by the Dept. of Electrical & Electronics Engineering of Vidya Academy of Science and Technology during 02‐06, January 2012, with technical co‐sponsorship from IEEE PES was a grand success in terms of technical knowledge amassed, wide area participation and perceptions on future outlook. IBM Software Center of Excellence - Inauguration

The IBM Software Centre of Excellence has been formally inaugurated in Vidya Academy of Science & Technology on 20th December, 2011. Mr. Anil Menon, Director, Marketing & Strategy IBM software, India/South Asia inaugurated the centre at 3.30PM.
